Tips For Buying an Elliptical Trainer

We all know that exercising is very important for our health but sometimes it can take quite a bit of motivation to get things done. Lots of people who want to lose weight are worried about how they look. They think that gyms are full of really slim and beautiful people and that they will look ugly in comparison. This is no excuse not to do any exercise however. If you have the space you should seriously think about buying some home gym equipment. This way you can sweat like a pig and no-one has to see you. However there are so many different types of home gym equipment sometimes it’s difficult to know which type to buy. However one type of exercise equipment you should consider is an Elliptical Trainer.

What is an Elliptical Trainer?

Elliptical trainers, also known as cross trainers, are a form of exercise equipment which is stationary. They allow you to exercise in a similar way you would if you went for a walk or a jog. However they are much better than this because they don’t put any strain on your joints. This is often a big problem with those who go our jogging on tarmac. When shopping for an Elliptical Trainer you will notice that there are two main types: ones with poles and ones without poles. Often it is recommended that you choose one that comes with detachable poles. The purpose of having the poles is that they allow you to work your upper body and not just your lower body. This allows you do work out your whole body and burn calories more efficiently.

When shopping around for an Elliptical Trainer you should think about a few things first of all, these can include the following pointers:-

What is your budget? There are many types of Elliptical Trainer all at different prices. You should always shop around for the best deal and even consider buying a second-hand model. People often buy items of home gym equipment only to use it just a few times and then they sell it because they don’t use it any more. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with the machine.

What manufacturer do you want to choose? There are so many different manufacturers of Elliptical Trainers and these include Rebok, Life Fitness and Schwinn. You should research each brand and decide if you want to buy a branded unit or a cheaper machine from a company you have never heard of before. Remember, you often pay higher prices because companies spend a lot of money on marketing, you might not be getting any better quality.

How easy and comfortable it is to use. Each machine is built to different dimensions and standards. The only true way you are going to be able to determine what machine you prefer to use is simply to try it out.

If you are unsure about any details it is always a good idea to go to your local fitness equipment shop. This way you’ll be ale to talk to the sales staff about what you are looking for and see what is available. You don’t necessarily have to buy there and then, you can go back home and check on the internet to see what the best prices are.

Elliptical Comparison – What To Look At When Comparing Elliptical Trainers

If you’re buying an elliptical, you’ll want to make several elliptical comparisons and get the best deal. Enter the Internet. With the knowledge you can find online, buyers can get a much better deal than they used to get at their local department store.

So what do you need to know when making elliptical comparisons? While the elliptical market is getting more crowded each year, there are some simple things you can look for to find the best value models.

This article will give you 7 main features to look at when you compare Elliptical Trainers along with where to make easy elliptical comparisons.

1) Stride Length – This is essentially the farthest distance between the pedals during the elliptical motion. Stride length ranges on ellipticals from 12 to 21 inches.

Stride length is important as a short stride length doesn’t fully work your leg muscles and doesn’t give you as effective a workout as longer stride ellipticals. Cheaper ellipticals usually offer a 12 to 15 inch stride.

For the average height person an 18 inch stride is good. Taller people may prefer a 20 inch stride and shorter people may prefer a 16 to 18 inch stride.

2) Upper Body Workout Arms – Most people want the option to work their arms while exercising. This helps provide resistance training for your upper body so you burn more calories and get a better workout overall. This feature is found on most Elliptical Trainers however on some – even the higher end ones – it is not available.

You also want to make sure you don’t have to lean over while using the bars which can diminish the effectiveness of your workout (this can happen on many of the cheaper elliptical models which don’t have the proper arm to leg pedal ratio).

3) Weight Capacity – The user weight capacity is a great indicator of the stability of the Elliptical Trainer. For example, a 250 lb user weight capacity may mean that it can take up to 250 lbs however it is not nearly as stable as one with a 350 lb user weight capacity.

The 250 lb elliptical also probably won’t hold up as well if you want to pick up your pace. Highly stable Elliptical Trainers will have higher user weight capacities (depending on your weight this could be 300 lbs and up).

4) Warranty – While warranties range for different Elliptical Trainers, you want to choose an elliptical with at least a one year parts warranty – preferably longer.

Just like user weight capacity, the length of the warranty is another indicator of the quality of parts used to build the elliptical machine. A longer warranty indicates a higher quality of elliptical construction.

5) Console: – While there are a range of different options here, it really depends on you. Do you want to see calories burned, speed, time, distance, heart rate? Do you want to see them all simultaneously?

One thing to watch for is that the console is well lit so you can read it while you exercise. Many cheaper ellipticals are hard to read, especially if the lighting in your workout area is not the best.

6) Resistance – Resistance is basically how hard your legs have to push during the elliptical motion. Resistance gives you more of a challenge while you workout and can help you ramp up your calorie burn or work intervals into your workout.

Most Elliptical Trainers do offer a range of resistance levels. Look for a trainer that makes resistance changes simple (i.e. one-touch resistance adjustment).

7) Price – Ellipticals range in price from $300 to $3000. It’s up to you what you pay but just keep in mind that with Elliptical Trainers – price usually reflects quality – you do get what you pay for.

Economy priced ellipticals (under $800) are simply not built as well as higher quality ellipticals in the $900+ range and this can end up costing you in repairs, injury and less effective workouts.

Finally, when buying your Elliptical Trainer, remember to consider everyone who will be using it, their weight capacity, workout preferences and fitness goals.

By knowing these facts when making elliptical comparisons, you’re way ahead of 99% of most elliptical buyers and well prepared to choose the best elliptical for you.

Best Elliptical Trainer Reviews

Exercise: Sole Elliptical Trainer Reviews

There are many Elliptical Trainer reviews, however, these Elliptical Trainer reviews cover some of the more common Elliptical Trainer names out there. Sole is not a common name associated with elliptical machines, however you can be sure that you will see their name more and more in different Elliptical Trainer reviews for some very good reasons that we will explain to you.

Because you may not have heard the name Sole in the Elliptical Trainer reviews that you have read, you may think that they are a brand new company trying to break into the fitness market. However, Sole has been in the hotel market, by providing treadmills for many upscale hotels such as the Hilton. They have been in business for over twenty years, which is no wonder that they are making some very spectacular Elliptical Trainer machines, and you will notice their name frequently coming up in Elliptical Trainer reviews.

One of the benefits of their machines is that their footpads have proper alignment. This is very important as your bodies alignment is usually thrown off when you use Elliptical Trainers, which is something that is not mentioned in Elliptical Trainer reviews. Sole eliminates this by having their footpads at a two degree inward angle. This simple but yet effective positioning makes a chance of injury to your back, knees, ankles and hips very slim.

Another piece of information that people may not notice in Elliptical Trainer reviews is the weight capacity of the machine. There are certain weight limits that Elliptical Trainers do have. Sole has taken notice to this, which is why they have a elliptical machine that can hold a weight capacity of up to four-hundred pounds. This is a great benefit for obese individuals who want to use a elliptical machine but cannot because their weight goes over the machines capacity. In fact, Sole provides the only machine that can hold this type of weight capacity which makes it very appealing for overweight individuals who are trying to lose weight with a machine that will also help them feel comfortable during the entire workout.

Sole also provides elliptical machines that offer some of the largest stride lengths, reaching up to twenty inches where other machines do not even exceed over sixteen inches. This is important, because the length of the stride for your arms not only helps you burn more calories, but it also benefits taller people. It is hard for people with long arms to use a elliptical machine that has a short stride length. In many Elliptical Trainer reviews, you will notice that the average stride length is anywhere form twelve to sixteen inches.

Apart form other elliptical machine manufacturers, Sole offers one of the best warranties. This is because Sole uses some of the bets quality for their parts and gives you great confidence that your machine will last for years to come.

Their Elliptical Trainer machines usually range under seventeen-hundred dollars, which make them a great buy for their quality and features.

You can look over other Elliptical Trainer reviews and compare some of the key benefits of the machines used in the reviews compared to the machines that Sole offers. You will see that despite the elliptical machine reviews that you come across, that Sole offers a highly competitive product with a bargain price. Because of this reason, elliptical machines made by Sole will become more known. After a while you will find Sole in more and more Elliptical Trainer reviews in the future and will be able to see the superior benefits that elliptical machines created by Sole offer.

Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer Review

The 2009 Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer combines all of the specifications of the Sole E35 and E55 but again, with being the next model up in Sole’s range of elliptical machines, there are some upgraded features to enjoy.

The Sole E95 elliptical has been rated as their ‘Absolute Best Buy’. For $1700 with shipping included from most online stores, these elliptical machines have everything you need to enjoy the ultimate workout. You are literally benefiting from features which are integral parts of commercial ellipticals which are double or even triple the price of the E95!

The quality is typical of Sole. It stands very robust for daily use and is backed up by the same two year in-home labor and five year parts warranty with lifetime on the frame. The upgraded features include a larger console with two vibrant LED displays, molded hand grips, a heavier 29lb fly wheel and a higher weight capacity.

I have said it before about the E35 and E55 that these elliptical machines are not the most compact of equipment so planning where to position the equipment is important. The Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer is 15lbs heavier than the E55, mainly because it holds a higher weight capacity of 400lbs. If anything, this weight is a complete benefit, keeping the machine well grounded and stable during even the most intense workouts. Assembly is required but with the clear instructions, it should only take a matter of a few hours at most. Sole customer support is extremely helpful if you experience any difficulties.

A smooth oscillating motion is achieved with the Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer by the whisper drive system functioning in both forward and reverse motion. Even during high intensity, high resistance workouts the combination of the 29lb flywheel and high gear ratio, help provide very challenging workouts. Mix this up utilizing the power incline and in no time at all, will you start seeing amazing results.

The larger console houses two vibrant LED windows to display all the workout information you require, keeping close monitoring on your fitness. Just like with the E35 and E55 elliptical machines, an mp3 player jack with built in speakers, a built in fan and a water bottle holder are also an integral part of the console.

Pros - Warranty, quality, stability, stride, power incline, features, value.

Cons - Size.

It isn’t any wander that the Hilton Hotel group use Sole elliptical machines in their health suites. At $1700, the Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer is definitely an ‘Absolute Best Buy.’ Summing up the features and quality, along with Sole’s faith in their products, the E95, is a fierce competitor within it’s range. Even if the E95 price tag does not fit your budget, the Sole E55 and Sole E35 are definitely worth considering.

Exercise: Who Makes the Best Elliptical Trainer?

There are so many elliptical machines on the market, but who really does make the best Elliptical Trainer? You may think that it is only a matter of preference and opinion of who makes the best Elliptical Trainer, however this is not the case. There is actually a manufacturer who by far is rated in making the best Elliptical Trainer. They are know as Precor. If you have looked into Elliptical trainers, then you surely have heard of Precor machines, however you may be wondering why they are considered to make the best Elliptical Trainers. Precor has what they call the EFX series which vary in features but have one common thread to have them considered the best Elliptical Trainer.

One of the best features of an EFX and one of the reasons of why it is considered the best Elliptical Trainer, is the ease of use. By having a machine that is easy to use, it makes your workout a lot more enjoyable, then wasting time trying to figure out what buttons to press and how to track your workout.

The impact of a Elliptical Trainer is normally low, however with the EFX, it maintains a even lower impact then most average Elliptical Trainers, which is another reason why this is rated the best Elliptical Trainer. Because of the extremely low impact that the EFX provides, your workouts on the machine seem easier then doing simple aerobic exercises even though you are working your body out just as hard. This adds a great benefit to users of the machine as they do not have to worry about feeling strained or fatigued. This can greatly assist newcomers who are trying to get into shape, into helping them build more mental confidence as well as dedication to using the machine to get their bodies into shape. This also encourages people to use the machine as it does not feel strenuous, but does provide a great workout at the same time. This low impact is not easily found on other elliptical machines, which is why this feature stands out on a EFX and is another great contribution as to why this machine is looked at as the best Elliptical Trainer.

Besides these great benefits that help make the EFX considered the best Elliptical Trainer, the EFX is backed up by a ten year warranty which is one of the best warranties offered for elliptical machines and goes beyond the standard warranty within its industry. This shows the quality and confidence that is put into the EFX which shows that Precor stands behind their products and is no surprise why they are considered as providing the best Elliptical Trainer.

For all of these reasons, you can see why Precor offers what is not only considered the best Elliptical Trainer, but also in providing the most superior machines that can not be rivaled by many. After being in business for over twenty-five years, it is no wonder why Precor achieves such a high reputation in providing the best Elliptical Trainer in the industry.

How To Compare Ratings On Different Elliptical Trainers On The Market

Ratings for Elliptical Trainers are not a one-size-fits-all sort of standard. Ratings can tell you which of these machines are right for you based on your fitness level and the features that you are most interested in having. There are many sources for these ratings. One such source is Consumer Search. This ratings system uses a combination of ratings from other ratings makers such as Consumer Reports and other ratings sources.

The Elliptical Trainer that was rated as the best for entry-level buyers was the Spirit XE 350. This machine is less expensive than other trainers, such as the Precor, but it has lots of features. It has ten exercise programs that you can customize to your fitness level and preferences. This includes upper body work, which is not available on all Elliptical Trainers. It can hold a person weighing up to 325 pounds.

The Precor EFX 5.17i was rated as the best overall in Elliptical Trainers. This is an entry-level trainer, certainly. However, it has some advantages that reviewers find preferable to many Elliptical Trainers in all classes. One of those advantages is its twenty different levels of resistance. It also has a large degree of adjustability in its incline. The steepness can be set anywhere from 12 to 25 degrees. One unusual feature of the Precor EFX 5.17i is that it is said to have no limit on its weight capacity. People who are heavy and just beginning to exercise should have no problem starting with this machine. Unlike the Spirit XE 350, it does not offer the means for an upper body workout.

The Precor EFX 5.33 model, on the other hand, is rated as an excellent club-quality Elliptical Trainer. There are fourteen programs available, some of which you can set yourself or are heart-rate controlled. This machine supplies the tools for an upper body workout. It, too, has twenty different fitness levels. The incline is fixed, at 20 degrees. One thing that makes this a club quality trainer is that it has a ten year warranty on parts with one full year on labor. There is a lifetime warranty on the frame itself. This machine has no weight limits, either.

The Fitness Quest Eclipse 1100 HR/A is rated as one of the best budget range Elliptical Trainers. In the budget lines, manufacturers do not often give more than a 90-day warranty. However, the Fitness Quest Eclipse 1100 HR/A allows for a full one year of parts and labor. It does have some good features for a budget model. It has twelve programs on it, ten preset and two programs that are controlled by your heart rate. It is supposed to be able to hold 275 pounds, but it is a lightweight model, so it is not as stable as the more expensive Elliptical Trainers.

You can get ratings for different Elliptical Trainers from many sources. Some people like to go directly to Consumer Reports or Consumer Guide. These ratings may vary, as the different reviewers are more impressed by different features of the Elliptical Trainers. The best course of action is to read several reviews and compare them all.

Tips on Buying Commercial Elliptical Trainers

If you’re a dedicated exercise buff, you’ll want to have your own exercise equipment at home. You’ll be acutely aware that having a home gym will help you save on the valuable money and time you’ll otherwise be spending on getting to and from the gym. But there are certain advantages to going to the gym – one of which is that you’re able to benefit from the state of the art equipment available at the gym, such as commercial Elliptical Trainers.

Commercial Elliptical Trainers are, understandably, of a considerably higher quality than home trainers. Gyms invest in good equipment, and none of them want to take the risk that any of their patrons may be able to distinguish cheap exercise machines from ones that are more worth the membership fees. Commercial trainers are often sold in bulk, but if you can afford a commercial trainer for home use, it would be a great investment. It’s not just for the bragging rights! If you don’t live alone, it’ll also be a great gift for your loved ones!

But in general, home trainers don’t come with the features available in commercial trainers. Home trainers are manufactured to be “basic” versions of commercially available trainers, which is to say they don’t have the fancy stuff that makes gym Elliptical Trainers so much fun to use. Among these is the heart monitor, which is a safeguard for people who may wish to keep a closer watch on their cardiac performance, in case they need to maintain a certain heart rate while exercising, for medical purposes.

And of course, having a home gym makes you miss out on the other fun things about going to a public place to exercise, which include — but are not restricted to — meeting new people and interacting with personal trainers. If you aren’t a very public person, and would rather exercise with the help of online classes, training videos and the like, you’ll definitely prefer a home exercise kit.

Elliptical trainers have been found to be good for the body overall. The primary benefit of such machines is that they exercise the cardiac muscles. And since all the limbs are exercised, it burns more calories throughout the whole body than other cardiovascular machines with fewer features.

Elliptical trainers are often compared to treadmills. Treadmills are the traditional indoor alternative to jogging, and is said to be more effective in toning the muscles. But commercial Elliptical Trainers have the benefit of giving not just your legs, but your full body a total workout!

Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer Review

Just when everyone thought that Schwinn had pulled out all the stops with the Schwinn 430, no one knew that they would be able to engineer a model that will arguably beat it. Well they just have with the Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer.

The biggest difference with the Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer is the new Variable Stride Technology allowing you to adjust the stride length by applying pressure with your feet on the pedals, without having to step off the machine. Stride length can be adjusted from 2 to 26 inches so finding your comfort zone is extremely easy once you get the hang of it.

In comparison with other elliptical machines within the affordable range, the Schwinn 460 is well constructed, made from higher graded steel than the 430. Even with its smaller footprint on much bigger, more expensive elliptical machines, the 460 holds up extremely well on stability.

After assembly, which usually takes only a couple of hours, the initial observations are the compactness; the solid rubber coated/slip resistant pedals and the ergonomic design of the handles.

The Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer console houses a backlit touch screen which is not only very simple to use but it very intuitive and easy to read. It will display the usual speed, time, distance, calories and level and makes workouts simple and easy to perform. The manual mode is self explanatory but there are also 16 programs, two of which are customizable for 2 users. This is quite a cool feature as it keeps track of your total usage per user and the display will indicate what kind of stride you need to perform during the pre-programmed workout.

With the variable stride and usual functioning of elliptical machines, the Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer is extremely versatile. For cardio fitness, high intensity interval training is easily possible for effective calorie burn but with the 16 resistance levels, resistance training is also possible. There are heart rate sensors in the hand grips but the heart rate monitoring strap provided is instantaneous and is a feature you normally would only find on more premium ellipticals.

On the practical side, the water bottle holder is conveniently positioned and the built-in 3 speed fan works extremely well during the more intense workouts.

Pros - Versatile, Construction, Value, Compact, Variable Stride

Cons - Warranty

The Schwinn 430 is already a top seller with home users, so it is quite apparent that with all the upgrades on the 460, that these elliptical machines will prove a fantastic investment also. If you are looking for an elliptical that is affordable but is also extremely versatile to facilitate all kinds of cardio workouts, then look no further than the Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer.
